The Train

“The noisy sound of the train passing was better than the silence that I faced at home. I was actually grateful for the train. Grateful for the wait. I was in no rush to go home to a husband that seemed to have stopped talking for the past few months. Hi and bye were the only words that came out of his mouth. When I asked how he’s doing, his reply would simply be he’s okay. After work, he got straight in the bed and slept until the next morning. You have to understand this was not the husband I married twenty years ago.”

The husband that I married twenty years ago was so full of life. All he seemed to want to do was go, and go some more. He’d go to work for twelve hours a day and come home with so much energy. I’d be the one to say, “Babe I need a nap before we go.” My husband’s response would be, “You can sleep at night when its time to go to bed.” As tired as I would be, I would muster up the energy to do whatever he wanted. No matter what, I wanted to make my husband happy.

The train’s loud whistle interrupted my thoughts. I looked in my rear view mirror and noticed other cars turning around rerouting. I guess they figured the train was too long. Maybe they had a home to go to where there was peace. As for me, at that specific time and location, my peace came from waiting on this loud train that passed. And as crazy as it may sound, I was anxious to wait.

“Do you believe he’s having an affair Myia?” I recalled as my thoughts shifted back to a conversation that I had while visiting my brother and his wife last week. “Karen, men don’t always cheat,” my brother Craig interjected his wife. At the comment Karen simply shrugged her shoulders. “I agree with you Craig but the thought has crossed my mind. I mean, what else would you think? He seemed to have no interest in me at all. Craig you know my husband and you know how he used to be.” I remember pouring my heart out to my brother. “You’re right Myia I do know your husband, which is why I don’t think he’s having an affair. One thing I know for sure is that Craig loves you. I never doubted that one bit. That man came to me and asked for your hand in marriage. Me being your big brother never expected that. I have major respect for that man. I just know in my heart of hearts, he wouldn’t cheat on you.” “Well Dear God Craig, please tell me what is going on with my husband. I’m desperate.” I pleaded with my brother. My thoughts were interrupted by a knock on my passenger window. I looked at an elderly man and then at the train tracks. I then noticed cars going around me over the tracks. The train had passed. It was over. I looked back at the elderly man who was motioning for me to go. I wanted for him to go around also. I would gladly wait for another train.
